Chemistry A Level at Central Foundation Girls' School

Course description

This course will suit you if you are enthusiastic and interested in chemistry, or have an interest in further study and careers in chemistry or related areas.

Course content

AS Level consist of the following 4 modules:
Development of practical skills - You will have skills of planning, implementing, analysis and evaluation. Foundations in Chemistry - atoms, compounds and molecules and equations, amount of substance, Acid –base redox reactions and electrons, bonding and structure.

Periodic table and energy - Periodic Table and periodicity, group 2 & the halogens, qualitative analysis, enthalpy changes, reaction rates and equilibrium.

Core organic Chemistry - basic concepts, hydrocarbons, alcohols and haloalkanes, organic synthesis and bonding and structure

A Level consists of the 4 AS Modules above plus the following 2 modules:
Physical chemistry and transition elements - reaction rates and equilibrium, pH & buffers, enthalpy, entropy and free energy, redox and electrode potentials and transition elements. Organic chemistry and analysis – aromatic, carbonyl and nitrogen compounds, carboxylic acid and esters, polymers, organic synthesis, chromatography & NMR.

Entry requirements

 5 good GCSEs with 5 in En PLUS

Assessment

Exams will be sat at the end of either year 1 for AS or year 2 for A Level and will cover theory and practical skills of the content taught during the course.

AS Level Chemistry - Modules 1 to 4
Paper 1: Breadth in chemistry - multiple choice and structured questions
Paper 2: Depth in chemistry - structured and extended response questions

A Level Chemistry - a range of multiple choice, structured and extended response questions
Paper 1: Periodic table, elements and physical chemistry –content from Modules 1, 2, 3 and 5
Paper 2: Synthesis and analytical techniques – content from Module 1, 2, 4 and 6
Paper 3: Unified chemistry – content from Modules 1 - 6

This course will suit you if you are enthusiastic and interested in chemistry, or have an interest in further study and careers in chemistry or related areas.

Future opportunities

A Level Chemistry is also a traditional and respected qualification that provides a foundation for numerous further study and career options, including chemistry, engineering, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, pharmacology, veterinary science, forensic science and other sciences.

Further information

You will take both theoretical and practical lessons, where you will participate in discussions and debates, demonstrate application of number, ICT skills, working with others, analysis and problem solving skills. You will be required to do independent study and research.
