Course description

Why study Religious Studies?

Religious Studies is one of the most valuable subjects to study in the tumultuous and diverse society that we live in today. It is a highly regarded, academic discipline that challenges and questions the essence of humanity. It uses and promotes higher level skills of critical analysis and reasoning to examine questions that have puzzled humans for centuries. It enables young people to develop their skills of evaluation alongside an understanding of morality, tolerance and diversity. We can’t promise answers, but we can promise an extremely enjoyable and challenging subject!

AS: Unit 1 Religion and Ethics. Ethical Theories of Utilitarianism and Situation Ethics; The Nature and Value of Human Life; Abortion and Euthanasia.

AS: Unit 2 World Religions: Buddhism, Samsara & the Three Marks of Existence; The Four Noble Truths; The Eightfold Path; The Sangha.

A2: Unit 3 Religion and Ethics Free Will and Determinism; Virtue Ethics; Sexual Behaviour and Human Relationships; Science and Technology.

A2: Unit 4 Religion and Human Experience – Life, Death & Beyond Religious & Secular perspectives on the Nature & Value of Human Life. Religious & Secular ideas about the importance of life, death & life after death.

Entry requirements

Grade B in GCSE Religious Studies, full or short course.
