English Literature AS level at The Dukeries Academy

Course description

Studying English Literature offers a wide variety of exciting opportunities for students. The ability to analyse, investigate and challenge your understanding of the world through the study of texts is a powerful skill. Students engaged with this course will develop abilities that are both highly sought after in the world of work and during University study.

To enjoy this course you must be excited about approaching texts which challenge your ideas and opinions. A love of fiction, reading and the opportunity to broaden and deepen your understanding of the world will be crucial. You will need to be curious about how the world is represented in various texts and be ready to question why writers choose to share their visions in a particular way. This course is certainly a challenge, but presents students with a unique range of opportunities and provides them with highly-regarded skills that will be invaluable for University study and beyond.

Entry requirements

Level 6 in both English Language and English Literature. 5 A*-C grades at GCSE (including Maths).

Assessment

  • 2 externally assessed exam papers
  • Poetry and drama (worth 60% of total qualification)
  • Prose (worth 40% of total qualification)
  • No Coursework

Future opportunities

The skills learnt across this course prepare students for a variety of exciting careers and opportunities. Many students will opt to study an English degree at University. Students will be well equipped for higher education, with A Level English providing students with a highly regarded qualification to support UCAS applications, regardless of your choice of degree. Students will be able to pursue a huge variety of careers, which include: law, publishing, management, business, teaching and public services.
