A Level Computing at Merchants’ Academy

Course description

Why should I choose Computing?

Have you ever wanted to control the world! To make something from nothing! Computing is a course which will bring you to the cutting edge of the digital world. You will have the opportunity to write programs to control robots, to make interactive webpages and to rewrite the digital world around us for your own bidding.

Not only is that but there also a shortage of capable programmers in the UK. Having computer science as a qualification opens up a lot of professions (see below) many of which are desperate for more qualified people.

Course content

The core of the computing curriculum is focused around developing a sound knowledge of high level software coding. You are required to design and develop a business application using industry standard software development tools such as VB.net and Java.

The course covers a wide range of topics including looking at the inner workings and parts of computer systems, comprehending data processing between critical components using a scientific approach and understanding the legislations pertaining to electronic systems and data processing.

You will also be offered the chance to take part in an international competition called student robotics, where teams design, build and program a robot to take part in a challenge.

Assessment

Exams focus on both the academic knowledge learnt in lessons and programming. In AS the programs used in exams are pre released so students can look at them and appreciate how they work.
