Computer Science with Mobile Applications Development BTEC Extended Diploma Level 3 at The Manchester College

Course description

As the fastest growing area in computing, and with more and more people solely using handheld devices, understanding mobile platforms and developing applications for them is big business. This dynamic course is designed for anyone with an interest in mobile app development. From the start of the course, the focus will be on developing hands-on programming skills as you learn a number of different languages including C#, Objective-C for iPhone, Java for Android and JavaScript for Unity. You’ll take a closer look at computer networking and evolving, interactive web technologies, as you learn how to apply these developments to a mobile platform. As well as following all the latest technologies & trends and developing your skills with PHP, HTML 5, CSS 3 and databases like MySQL, you’ll also have the opportunity to develop your own apps for both Android and iPhone devices.

Entry requirements

We’d like you to have at least 5 GCSEs, including Maths and English, at grades A*-C. Ideally, you’ll also have a grade B or above in Maths or in Computer Science.


Throughout the course, you’ll be completing a number of different projects and assignments to check you’re developing the relevant skills. These will include live briefs set by our employer partners too!

As you build the skills and abilities needed to be successful in mobile app development, you’ll have a number of opportunities to continue developing your knowledge or start an exciting new job. You could progress onto a university-level degree of your choice or begin an apprenticeship in the computing sector.       Local area

      Northenden is a suburb of south Manchester. There are shops, a supermarket, restaurants and takeaways 15 minutes’ walk from the campus in central Northenden. There are also a small supermarket and shops closer to the campus. Northenden is surrounded by green space. The campus is minutes away from Gib Lane Wood and Wythenshawe Park which includes a community farm. It is also close to the Mersey Valley nature reserve; a riverside walk through miles of countryside and parkland.
