Boxing Academy - NVQ - Level 1 at Bolton College

Course description

Fancy throwing some punches with Amir Khan?

This course is run in partnership with the Boxing World Champion and Gloves Community Gym, and it incorporates NVQ Level 1 in Sport, Recreation and Allied Occupations.  

This is an exciting opportunity for elite and aspiring boxers looking to train full-time whilst gaining valuable educational qualifications.

Course content

You will study six mandatory units, covering the following topics:

  • Setting up, taking down and storing equipment
  • Maintaining facility areas
  • Providing good levels of service to participants and customers
  • Planning and preparing a session
  • Leading an activity within a session
  • Dealing with accidents and emergencies

Entry requirements

No formal qualifications are required but a commitment to sport and fitness must be shown. We will also ask you to attend an informal interview and provide a satisfactory school reference.


During this course you will maintain a training diary and be asked to complete a series of tasks related to boxing training. You will be assessed internally, and externally verified by City and Guilds.

Financial information

Government-funded Further Education courses are usually free if you are aged 16-18 and are a British or European Union resident.  Financial help is available for some students, whose families are on low income. Future opportunities

After you have completed the course you could remain in college and progress on to the Boxing NVQ Level 2. 


Alternatively, if you choose to look for paid work you could opt for a Boxing Apprenticeship and work as an Apprentice Coach or Fitness Instructor. 


Following further study you could work as a Boxing Coach or Fitness Instructor and earn between £14,000 and £20,000 a year, depending on experience.
