Further Maths AS/A Level (Edexcel) at Benton Park School

Course description

A-level Further Mathematics is designed to broaden and deepen the mathematical knowledge and skills developed when studying A-level Mathematics. It may be studied alongside or after taking A-level Mathematics and provides a stimulating experience for those who enjoy the subject.

Course content

Year 12

Further Pure 1

Series, Complex Numbers, Numerical Solutions of Equations, Coordinate Systems, Matrices, Proof


Algorithms, The Route Inspection Problem, Critical Path Analysis ,Linear Programming, Matchings

Statistics 2

Binomial Distribution, Poisson Distribution, Continous Random Variables, continous Distributions, Sampling, Hypothesis Testing

Year 13

Further Pure 2

Inequalities, Series, Differential Equations, Further comlex numbers, Maclaurin and Taylor Series.

Mechanics 2

Kinematics, Centres of Mass, Work and Energy, Collisions, Statics

Mechanics 3

Further Kinematics, Elastic Springs and Strings, Further Dynamics, Motion in a Circle, Statics

Entry requirements

Students will be expected to achieve a Grade A in GCSE Maths to enrol on this course.


All modules are 100% exam which is 1 hr 30 mins and marked out of 75 – each carries equal weighting to the final mark

Future opportunities

Studying further maths will enable students to progress on to a variety of higher education programmes, apprenticeships or into full-time employment. The university or employment areas include, but are not limited to: Maths Statistics Engineering Physics Economics Insurance Accountancy Computer Science or Computer Games Design
