Food Technology A Level at Heworth Grange Comprehensive School

Course description

Course content

Advanced Level D&T: Food Technology provides students with opportunities to gain personal satisfaction and a positive experience from working with a variety of food products. Practical problem solving processes in the course will encourage independent learning and stimulate creativity and innovation. This course is designed to encourage candidates to take a broad view of design and technology, food science and nutrition. It will develop students’ capacity to design and make products and to appreciate the complex relationships between design, materials, manufacture and marketing.

AS Unit 1 FOOD1

Materials and Components (Nutrients, Additives, Energy and Water), Design and Market Influences (Dietary planning, Health, Social and Cultural Influences, Food Choice, New Product Design, Food Safety and Hygiene and Food Legislation) Examination 50% AS, 25% A2

AS Unit 2 FOOD2

Researching, designing, making, planning and developing a food product suitable for manufacture. Coursework portfolio of three tasks consisting of both practical work and folder of written evidence. 50% AS, 25% A2

A2 Unit 3 FOOD3

Materials and components (Food science and nutrition, micro-organisms and Enzymes), Design and Market Influences, Processes and Manufacture. Examination 25% A2

A2 Unit 4 FOOD4

Developing a product that meets an identified need through the design process. Coursework portfolio consisting of both practical work and folder of written evidence. 25% A2

Entry requirements

Grade C GCSE Food Technology

A keen interest in food and a willingness to take part in practical tasks, experimentation and theory

Assessment

Year 12 (AS)

  • Unit 1 - Exam
  • Unit 2 - Portfolio

Year 13 (A2)

  • Unit 3 - Exam
  • Unit 4 - Single Design task
