Topics covered at AS level will be scientific, psychological and historical/ socio-cultural.
Topics covered at A2 Level will be scientific, psychological and contemporary.
Applied Exercise Physiology at AS focuses on how understanding the body and its systems can help lead to a healthy and active lifestyle. At A2 students explore how the use of specialised training methods can optimise elite performance.
Skill Acquisition at AS focuses on how skill is acquired and the impact of psychological factors on performance. At A2, students investigate how various Sports Psychology theories can ensure the elite performer maximises their potential for success.
Opportunities for Participation at AS introduce some of the concepts, categorisations and benefits of physical activity to both the individual and society.
Contemporary Influences at A2 deals with the optimisation of performance to achieve elite status.
The practical elements (Units PHED2 & PHED4) are based upon the principles of acquiring and applying knowledge, skills and understanding from the learning of the theoretical aspects, in order to develop and improve performance in a minimum of two sport related roles (performer/coach/official).
Candidates will demonstrate specific personal skills and techniques, and will observe, analyse and evaluate their own and others’ performance.
Key skills of Communication, Application of Number, Information Technology, Working with Others, Problem Solving and Improving Own Learning and Performance will integrate well within the course structure.
Essential Entry Requirements:
- Grade B or above at GCSE in Physical Education
- A minimum of 4 ‘B’ grades and 2 ‘C’ grades to include C or above in English and Mathematics
Preferred Entry Requirements:
- Grade B in Biology or in Biology component of Double Science, GCSE PE B or above - should be actively participating in a sport to club level
