Mathematics AS and A Level at Newman Catholic School

Course description

Students who choose to continue with Maths after GCSE will take AS Level in Year 12 and an A2 Level in Year 13. In order to be accepted onto the course, students are required to have a grade C at Higher GCSE. We use the MEI Textbook which supports the OCR examinations. Grades are A* – E.

Course content

Year 12

3 modules covered and assessed throughout the year. All 3 exams are taken in the summer season. Required modules are:

  • Core 1 and Core 2: Algebra and Calculus, Shapes, Number.
  • The 3rd module is either Decision 1 (logical processing), Statistics 1 (Data) or Mechanics 1 (Physics application of Maths) and this is at the schools discretion.

Year 13

3 modules covered and assessed throughout the year. All 3 exams are taken in the summer season. Required modules are:

  • Core 3 and Core 4: Algebra and Calculus, Shapes, Number.
  • The 3rd module is either Decision 1 (logical processing), Statistics 1 (Data) or Mechanics 1 (Physics application of Maths) and this is at the schools discretion depending on which one was taken in Year 12. Alternatively, there are Decision 2, Statistics 2 and Mechanics 2 which support the first module.
