Health & Social Care BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate at Outwood Academy Newbold

Course description

If you want to persue a career in health care support work, or to move towards a professional career such as nursing or social work, this course could be for you. You will study a range of subjects which are relevant to anyone wanting to work in this field. This course is suitable for anyone with an interst in health, well being and human growth, development and behaviour. We aim to have Heath and Social Care Professionals visit lessons to broaden understaning of the different roles and work done by people in this sector. Placements will be arranged in your free periods to allow you to gain some proactica experience.

Course content

Mandatory Units

  • Unit 1: Human Lifespan
    Assessment: Exam (Year 1)
  • Unit 2: Working in Heath and Social Care
    Assessment: Exam (Year 2)
  • Unit 6: Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs
    Assessment: Internally Assessed (Year 1)

Optional Units
Choose one of the following:

  • Unit 14: Sociological Perspectives
  • Unit 15: Psychological Perspectives
  • Unit 16: Supporting Additional Needs
  • Unit 18: Physiological Disorders

All of the optional Units are internally assessed in Year 2.

Entry requirements

You will need a grade C or above in English or BTEC Level 2 in Health and Social Care It is an advantage to have taken BTEC Level 2 in Heath and Social Care or GCSE Child Development, but not a necessity

Exam: Weighting 50%
Course work: Weighting 50%

You must be able to work both independently and as part of a team, and be prepared to interact and communicate with clients and Heath and Social Care Professionals. You must have good organisational skills.


Candidates will be assessed in a range of methods including essays, reports, exams and presentaions.


Future opportunities

This qualification is generally taken alongside other BTEC or A-level qualification as part of 2- year programme of learning. This will enable you to progress to a degree programme chosen from a range of programmes in the Heath and Social Care sector
