Chinese AS/ALevel at Brockenhurst College

Course description

This is a one year course designed for learners who have previously studied GCSE Chinese or native speakers.

Mandarin Chinese, a language spoken by nearly one third of the world's population, is becoming a popular business and economic language.

By studying A level Mandarin Chinese you will become familiar with the fascinating culture and language of this historic and diverse country.

The knowledge and understanding of Chinese language and culture will be invaluable in your future studies and will give you the edge in your career.

Students who have studied the course comment upon the frequency of opportunities to use the language, and the skills gained from studying giving them an edge over other candidates.

Course content

On this one year A-level course, you will

  • revise Pinyin

develop your

  • research-based critical essay writing and daily life writing,
  • Mandarin speaking
  • Mandarin listening
  • simplified symbols and reading skills

by studying a wide range of topics that will enable you to communicate successfully when working or travelling in China.

Entry requirements

This course is mainly available to native Mandarin or Cantonese speakers.

Assessment

A-level Chinese examinations are divided equally between listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Financial information

Cost: Students will be asked to pay up to £20 for text/grammar workbooks

Future opportunities

This course will strengthen your understanding of the Chinese language, culture and the modern society. 

It will be very useful in careers such as politics, tourism, business, marketing and hospitality.

Further information

You will have the chance to become a language buddy with a student from the GCSE Chinese Chinese class to help each other with English or Chinese.
