Music at The Grange School
After several years of syllabus changes
AQA have devised a new syllabus which
is ideally suited to Grange students. The
first year of the course leads to an AS
level qualification and offers an excellent
opportunity for those pupils who are
proficient instrumentalists and/or singers,
including those whose primary interests
may lie elsewhere (e.g. the three sciences),
to demonstrate a breadth of knowledge,
ability and interest which can make a
significant difference to university selectors.
The second year of study leads to the
full A level, which, despite its practical
element, is widely regarded as a demanding
academic A level course. The course
offers an opportunity to develop skills in
performance, composition and harmony,
and to study major musical works in depth.
We are delighted to be able to offer this
new specification in the Music Department,
as it seems to contain all the elements of an
ideal course of study for musicians.
Our standard academic entry requirements
into the Sixth Form at The Grange School are:
¬ Students should secure Grade A or A* in the
four or five subjects to be studied at AS level;
¬ Where the subject is not offered at GCSE
(e.g. Philosophy), we would expect to see
evidence of Grade A or A* in related subjects;
¬ These results should be accompanied with
four other GCSEs at Grade B or above which
should include English and Mathematics if
they are not one of the chosen AS subjects;
¬ Any remaining GCSE examination results
should be at Grade C or above.
