Do you enjoy taking part in sport? Do you want to study Sport at Level 3 in the future? Would you benefit from the opportunity to improve your GCSE profile? You will be supported by a team of enthusiastic, dedicated and approachable teachers throughout all stages of your course and will be encouraged to strive for the best that you can achieve in all units.
This is a vocational programme which means that it is tailored towards students who are aiming for a career in a sport-related field or those who wish to progress to level 3 study in the future. It is coursework-based, so there are no exams and your coursework is marked as you go along so you always know what level you are working at.
This is a one year course and is split into units of study. Some units such as Anatomy & Physiology and Psychology for Sports Performance will require you to produce written assignments to demonstrate your knowledge, but you will also complete a unit of Practical Sport which is based entirely around your practical performance in a range of sports. The other units you will study will contain a mixture of written and practical assignments.
You will need 4 GCSE passes at grade D or above in a range of subjects including maths and/or English Language. At least one grade D must be in English Language and/or maths.
It is not necessary to have studied PE at GCSE.
The department offers a range of enrichment opportunities, including trips to the Chill Factore and Ski Trips to the USA; a range of guest speakers to stimulate learning and access to college sports teams and academies that play in a range of leagues to accommodate different levels of ability.
On successful completion of a level 2 BTEC First Diploma in Sport, you may choose to progress to employment in a sport-related occupation or you may choose to progress to study a Level 3 BTEC. The vast majority of students who have completed the Level 2 BTEC elect to progress onto the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport. Alternatively you may choose to study a different Level 3 BTEC at Cardinal Newman.
