AS/A2 Levels: Chemistry at Hind Leys College (Iveshead School)

Course description

Throughout the course, students will study Organic, Inorganic and Physical Chemistry.  Practical work is fundamental to Chemistry.  Assessments take place throughout the course and students are given opportunities to become equipped with the essential practical skills required to continue in other science disciplines. This course is suitable for students who wish to pursue careers in medicine, pharmacy, chemical engineering, dentistry and many others. 

Entry requirements

Minimum of grade 4 in English and grade 5 in Maths and 3 other A*-C GCSEs. B grade in Additional Science, or Physics.


There are three exam papers for this qualification, each lasting 2 hours. Each exam paper includes assessment of practical skills alongside the theory learned throughout the course. At least 15% of the marks for A Level Chemistry are based on what was learned during practicals. 20% of the assessment will require use of mathematical skills.

Future opportunities

You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses such as Biology or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in Chemistry, which could lead onto higher education in science related subjects or more general higher education courses.

With further training, you could go into a job related to Chemistry or one of the other sciences such as a Doctor, Nurse, Scientist or Pharmacist.

You could also go straight into a job as the AS and GCE is a recognised qualification that will help you to develop the basic skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.

    • Hind Leys College shares campus with Shepshed High School, St Botolphs C of E Primary School, Hind Leys Pre-School, The Oak Treehouse Nursery and Shepshed Toy Library.

      Shepshed Campus is only a short distance off Leicester Road from the A512, off Junction 23 of the M1.  The nearest train station is Loughborough.

      Bus links include Arriva bus nos. 126 and 127,  Paul Winson nos. 4 and 129, connecting Shepshed to Leicester, Loughborough, Coalville and Ashby de la Zouch.  

      Students attending Hind Leys College from the catchment areas and neighbouring villages are bussed to college through the Leicestershire County Council school transport provision.
