Religious Studies at East Leake Academy

Course description

The AS Level course includes the following modules:

* Philosophy of Religion 1
* Religious Ethics 1

These modules require the student to begin to come to terms with the basic ethical and philosophical traditions and thoughts that have shaped the history and morality of Western society. Students will tackle the issues of "right" and "wrong", "good" and "bad" and have to come to terms with an academic analysis of such questions as "Does God exist?", "Why does God exist?", "How can evil exist in a world created by an allpowerful God?", "Is it ever right to tell a lie?", "Is it ever right to kill?" and "What moral responsibility do we in the rich developed world have towards those in the developing world?"

Please note that despite its title this course is not aimed at students with any particular religious background. It is a general, rigorous academic subject with the large majority of pupils taking it having no religious affiliation whatsoever.

The A2 Level course includes the following modules:

* Philosophy of Religion 2
* Practical Ethics 2

These modules take the student into areas that apply the basics acquired at AS level to more complex ethical and philosophical problems. These areas include the role religion has to play in a highly scientific and technologically developed world and an analysis of the ethics surrounding the issue of the "Sanctity of Life" including such issues as suicide, euthanasia and abortion.
