Art and Design Specialist Pathway (Illustration and Print) BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma at Redbridge College

Course description

This creative programme allows you to develop your skills in a wide range of Art and Design media and techniques; through a series of core units and projects that are underpinned with contextual references and visual recording. These core elements prepare you to specialise in specific areas that can include:

  • Print Graphics
  • Illustration

The course is designed to give you a broad base of knowledge and experience. You will explore practice, and work independently on your own real-life project briefs. This course will provide you with the essential skills you need to land your first job or progress to university.

Course content

This course is about stretching your imagination and developing visualising skills in illustration. Areas covered will include visual storytelling, commercial advertising, and graphic image making. A studio based course that encourages the exploration of a broad range of creative media, including drawing, painting, photography, digital media and print Throughout the course there are core units in drawing and art history. Organised study visits to galleries and commercial illustration/design companies are also built into the course to build your knowledge and industry awareness. Key Areas of Study: - Drawing, Mixed Media & Photography - Painting - Printmaking - Computer Aided Design - Research and Theory

Entry requirements

You will need to have five GCSEs at Grade C, including maths and English, or a relevant BTEC Level 2 qualification. You will also be required to provide a portfolio of your previous projects you have completed. This can either be a hard copy or a digital portfolio (saved on a CD/DVD or USB stick, or links to content online).

Interview Process

Interview with a specialist tutor. Candidates will be required to show a portfolio of work, enthusiasm and a commitment to the course.


You'll be taught by our highly skilled team of staff who will pass on their years of industry knowledge and experience to you. Assessment takes place through a mixture of creative, practical and written projects.
