A level Biology at Haywood Sixth Form Academy

Course description

Outline of the course;

The course is divided into 8 topic areas covering the following: -1 Biological molecules, 2 Cells, 3 Organisms exchange substances with their environment, 4 Genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms, 5 Energy transfers in and between organisms, 6

Organisms respond to changes in their internal and external environments, 7 Genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems, 8 the control of gene expression.

 

Course content

Year 1

Unit 1, Biology and disease

Unit 2, the variety of living organisms

Year 2

Unit 3, populations and environment

Unit 4 control in cells and organisms

Exam/coursework breakdown

The course is divided into 3 examinations to be taken at the end of the course.

Paper 1 is a written exam lasting 2 hours covering any content from topics 1–4, including relevant practical skills, 91 marks and worth 35% of the A-level.

Paper 2 is a written exam lasting 2 hours covering any content from topics 1–4, including relevant practical skills, 91 marks and worth 35% of the A-level. 

Paper 3 is a written exam lasting 2 hours covering any content from topics 1–8, including relevant practical skills, 78 marks and worth 30% of the A-level.

 

Entry requirements

You will need have a Grade B or higher in your Science GCSE's 

Also you will also need five GCSE’s at A*to C including Maths and English

Assessment

Course is divided into 3 examinations to be taken at the end of the course.

Paper 1 is a written exam lasting 2 hours covering any content from topics 1–4, including relevant practical skills

Paper 2 is a written exam lasting 2 hours covering any content from topics 1–4, including relevant practical skills,

3 is a written exam lasting 2 hours covering any content from topics 1–8, including relevant practical skills,

Financial information

The course is open to anyone who is aged 16-18 on the 31st August,  in the year that the course starts

Future opportunities

Studying Biology gives you the opportunity to progress onto a biology degree at University or enter the job

market directly and train with an employer such as the NHS.  Future careers can include Forensic Scientist, Geneticist, Environmental Consultant, Pharmaceutical industry and Medical Sciences.
