Extended Project Qualification at Merchants’ Academy

Course description

Why should I choose the Extended Project Qualification?

This is a qualification which is designed to enrich your Sixth Form curriculum studies, by allowing you the freedom to explore and extend your knowledge of a subject area well beyond the confines of your A level subjects.

The emphasis of this qualification is to develop your skills of independent research, presentation skills and reflective learning. You will have a formal introduction to the project through lectures and other resources. Your tutor will work with your throughout the project but you will otherwise be expected to work independently for 120 hours.

Course content

The choice of projects is almost endless, as you choose the topic that you are interested in. It could be linked to what you aspire to study at university, be around one of your A level subjects, or an area that you are interested in outside of school.


You will be required to produce:

1) Product – an essay, product, composition, website, model etc.

2) Log – Evaluation and self assessment of your journey through the project from beginning to end.

3) Presentation – a formal presentation on how you completed your project to your tutor and peers.

Future opportunities

You acquire advanced study skills that will enhance your performance in all A level subjects. Moreover, you will impress universities and potential employers as you show study skills which are transferrable – extended writing, maturity and independent learning.

    • Merchants’ Academy Sixth Form aims to provide students with knowledge, understanding and experiences that are essential for the successful transition from school to university, employment or further training.
