Travel and Tourism Level 3 at Warrington & Vale Royal College
Do you have a keen interest in the travel industry? Students completing their BTEC Nationals in Travel and Tourism will be aiming to go on to employment, often via the stepping stone of higher education. The course has been developed in close collaboration with experts from professional bodies, businesses and universities. The Foundation Diploma in Travel and Tourism is gained at the end of the first year of a two year level 3 qualification. In the second year you will gain an Extended Diploma which is equivalent to three 'A' levels.
The Extended Diploma can also support learners who want to progress directly to employment in job roles within the travel and tourism sector or Higher Apprenticeships. Learners can also progress onto a university undergraduate course.
The Foundation Diploma is completed in one year studying full time and learners can then progress onto a second year of study to gain the Extended Diploma. The Foundation diploma has 4 mandatory units and a further 2 optional units.
You will study a number of different topic areas, including;
- The World of Travel and Tourism
- Global Destinations
- Managing the Customer Experience
- Travel and Tourism Enterprises
- Researching Current Issues in Travel and Tourism
- The UK as a Tourist Destination
- Working Overseas
- The Airport Experience.
You will need to possess 4 GCSEs at C or above including maths and English.
You will be assessed using a variety of methods including task set and marked by the awarding body, examination and tasks that are set and assessed by your teacher. These include projects, analysis of case studies and presentations.
You will need to purchase a uniform (approximately £50). You will also be asked to pay a contribution towards the cost of trips and residentials which are a mandatory part of the course.
The Foundation Diploma is the first year of a two year level 3 qualification. Students who complete the Foundation Diploma usually progress to the Extended Diploma, however, there are opportunities to move into apprenticeships from this course.
After successfully completing this Extended Diploma, you can progress to a university qualification at either foundation or undergraduate degree level, either here at the college or at other institutions. The qualification carries UCAS points and is recognised by higher education providers as contributing to meeting admission requirements to many relevant courses, for example;
- BSc (Hons) in International Travel and Tourism Management
- BA (Hons) in Hospitality and Travel Management
- BSc (Hons) in Hotel, Resort and Tourism Management
- HNC/D Travel and Tourism
- Higher Apprenticeship.
Will I complete work placements?
Whilst attending this course students have a variety of work experience opportunities.Are trips and residentials organised during the course?

This is a college based course, your learning will be enhanced by engaging with employers. You will have guest speakers attending the course and you can also involve yourself in work experience.
