World Development at West Derby School

Course description

Are you concerned about issues such as Third World debt or working conditions in sweatshops? Does the work of charities interest you? Do you buy fair trade products? Did you support the Make Poverty History campaign? If issues like these interest you, this could be the course for you!

This course will help you to develop an understanding of global issues and their impact on political issues, the news, people and societies. It explores the need to develop a more just and fair society and considers issues of poverty, inequality and fair trade. The course includes aspects of other subjects including Geography, Economics, History, Business Studies, Politics and Sociology.

The course has been developed by WJEC (Welsh Examination board). The main areas that are studied as part of the specification include:

* Development, Resources and Global Citizenship
* Poverty and Inequality
* Perspectives of Development
* Social Development

Entry requirements

Candidates will have already gained a knowledge and understanding of relevant areas through their study of a range of subjects at GCSE.

It is essential for candidates to have achieved at least a Grade B in GCSE English Language in addition to the Grade A-C in any of Geography, History or Business Studies before beginning this course.
