Mathematics at The New Sixth Bath
Maths at this level consists of the study of pure maths and the study of the application of mathematics to the physical world through:
Statistics (understanding and interpreting information);
Mechanics (understanding how and why physical objects move and behave as they do);
Decision maths (uses discrete mathematics to construct mathematical models to arrive at an optimal solution to real life problems).
Unit 1: Core 1 Mathematics. Algebra and functions, coordinate geometry in the (x,y) plane, sequences and series, differentiation, integration.
Unit 2: Core 2 Mathematics. Algebra and functions, coordinate geometry in the (x,y) plane, sequences and series, trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms, differentiation, integration.
Unit 3: Statistics 1. Representation and summary of data, probability, correlation and regression, discrete random variables, discrete distributions, the Normal distribution).
Unit 4: Core 3 Mathematics. Algebra and functions, trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms, differentiation, numerical methods.
Unit 5: Core 4 Mathematics. Algebra and functions, coordinate geometry in the (x,y) plane, sequences and series, differentiation and integration, vectors.
Unit 6: Statistics 2. The Binomial and Poisson distributions, continuous random variables, continuous distributions, samples, hypothesis tests.
Students will have at least a B grade in GCSE mathematics. They will need to be confident in the application of algebraic and other mathematical skills and have an interest in solving real life problems using these skills together with logical mathematical argument.
Maths is a most useful A Level for those going on to further study in maths, accounting, engineering,medicine, law and any science based courses.
