Computer Games Development Advanced BTEC Diploma at Derby College
This highly practical course will develop your creative abilities, with an emphasis on the skills needed for producing computer games. As well as gaining insights into this exciting profession, you will learn to use industry standard software to make 3D models, 3D animations, 2D games and 3D game levels.
If you do not have GCSE Maths or English at grades A*-C, you will also develop these skills. This will support your main programme of study, future progression and life skills.
Units studied include:
- Pre-Production Techniques for Media Industries
- Communication Skills
- Understanding the Computer Games Industry
- 3D Modelling
- 3D Animation
- Drawing Concept Art for Computer Games
- Sound for Computer Games
- Research Techniques for the Media Industries
- Working to a Brief in the Creative Media Industries
- Digital Graphics for Computer Games
- English or Maths (if necessary)
You will need at least four GCSEs at grades A*-C. You must have a grade C in either Maths or English Language and a minimum grade D in the other subject.
Alternatively you may have a BTEC Level 2 Diploma qualification at Merit or above, along with GCSE English Language or Maths at grade A*-C. Applications from mature learners with relevant work experience are also welcomed.
Prospective learners will also need to attend an interview and Taster Day.
You will be assessed through project-based practical work framed in industry scenarios, written assignments and presentations.
Learners studying maths or English will be assessed through a controlled assessment or final exam.
Learners need to pass all their 90-credit Diploma units to progress to the Extended Diploma. Further study and career opportunities are then available in areas such as game programming, game modelling and animation, game design, game art, animation and special effects.
