BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Horse Care at North Shropshire College - NSC

Course description

The course consists of the following units: 
 
• Undertake Work Related Experience in Land-based Studies
• Introduction to Riding Horses on the Flat
• Introduction to the Principles of Horse Behaviour
• Fit and Maintain Horse Tack and Clothing
• Undertake Horse Handling
• Undertake Routine Stable Duties
• Introduction to Lungeing Horses
• Introduction to Riding Horses over Fences
 
You are appointed a Personal Tutor for the duration of the course. 
 

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING WITH ME?

Riding boots are compulsory (jodhpur or long), approved hard hat (PAS015 or BSEN1384) and hairnet, dark jodhpurs, dark jumper, riding gloves, body protectors must be worn for jumping(BETA class 3) some are available to borrow, calculator.

College clothing is available.

HOW CAN I PREPARE MYSELF BEFORE THE COURSE BEGINS?

Gain a wide variety of experience within the equine industry

WHAT IS THE STRUCTURE OF THE COURSE?

This is a programme suitable for anyone wishing to eventually pursue a career with horses particularly if you have some hands-on experience with horses.  It provides an excellent route to further qualifications or the world of work.
 

Course content

Entry requirements

  • 5 or more GCSEs at Grade D/E or above
  • Appropriate NVQ level 1/Level 1 Diploma
  • Appropriate experience/knowledge gained in a related working environment
  • successful college interview.

Assessment

Academic and practical progress is assessed in a variety of ways including individual and group work, presentations, assignments, practicals, work-based assignments and tests.  Assessment is as you go along so as you complete each unit you build up the qualification while you study.  Each unit is awarded a separate grade – a pass, merit or distinction.

May be extra costs for study tours and visits

There will be some costs associated with equine duty weeks (e.g. food and accommodation).

Exam/tuition fees for mature students.

Future opportunities

It will give you the basic skills needed for employment in the horse industry as a trainee groom or stable assistant.  It also offers a progression route onto the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Horse Management course.
