Course description

The UK is the seventh biggest tourism market in the world, worth over £70 billion to the country each year. More than two million people are employed in Travel and Tourism in the UK, so there are lots of opportunities for you to find a rewarding career in the industry either in this country or abroad.

Studying a Travel and Tourism course at Wakefield College will help you gain the knowledge and qualifications you need to start work in this exciting industry. Your tutors have many years' experience of working the industry to help you understand just what you need to have a long and enjoyable career.

Course content

All the essential subject areas to give you a full understanding of the industry.  Amongst other things you will learn about UK and Worldwide Travel and Tourism Destinations, Overseas Resort Representatives and Operations, Customer Service, Promotion and Marketing, Hosting Conferences and Events.

You may also have the opportunity to work towards literacy and numeracy qualifications. 

Maths and English are key elements of any full-time programme of study in College. You need to have a GCSE at grade A*-C (or new grade 9-4), in these subjects on entry and you will be expected to improve your entry levels throughout the length of the course by attending sessions allocated on your timetable. These are varied and designed to cater for your ability levels. You will receive advice and guidance regarding the correct level for you.

Skills in Maths and English will support your full-time course, assisting you with assignment writing, research, job applications, presentations, managing your own finances and interpretation of data, to mention just a few. They will also help you in the future. Most employers are looking for ability in these areas and the majority of university courses require you to have Maths and English GCSEs at A*-C (or new grade 9-4).  This is why the development of Maths and English is so important, whatever your field of study.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at grade A* - C (or new grade 9-4) including English or Mathematics, or relevant Level 2 qualification with Merit grade, plus Level 2 literacy and numeracy.


By completion of assignments. You will undertake market research, case studies and investigations, presenting your findings in a variety of formats such as reports, brochures and presentations that you might find in working situations within the industry.

Financial information

Tuition and certification are free if you are aged 16-18 years old. Related additional costs may include materials, equipment, visits, residentials etc which are payable by all students.
Any student entered/registered with an Awarding Body who has been given free entry and then withdraws or is withdrawn by a tutor will incur the certification fee associated with the course. Any resit examination will incur a cost.

Future opportunities

Further study

Enhance your CV by taking other qualifications related to the Travel and Tourism industry such as Basic First Aid or Essential Food Hygiene. Some students may wish to learn a new foreign language or improve on one already studied at school. Some students progress onto a Higher Education course, such as the HNC / HND in Tourism Management run through Wakefield College.

Career opportunities

Air Cabin Crew, Travel agent, hotel receptionist, tour manager, tourist guide, Tourist Information Centre assistant, conference and banqueting assistant, visitor services assistant in museums, theme parks and stately homes. Students wishing to become overseas representatives or airline cabin crew should remember that there are often minimum age requirements (around 20-21 years) for these careers.
