Media and Photography Level 1 Diploma at Truro and Penwith College

Course description

This Level 1 Progression course will introduce you to the basics of digital imaging and media production. The course is designed to stimulate basic visual exploration, inspire simple creative practice, promote independent study and develop elementary skills in research, planning and time management.

Course content

The course will provide you with an introduction to a broad range of creative and technical skills in media production and photography. The qualification has been designed to provide you with a sound base of skills, knowledge and understanding which will enhance your self-confidence and impart an understanding of the career demands and opportunities within the exciting and dynamic creative media industries.

During the course you will learn traditional and digital photographic techniques in addition to time based multimedia video production. Emphasis is placed on the development of your own practice and aspirations.

Progression 1 allows you to study a BTEC Level 1 vocational Certificate and will include Functional Skills English and Maths up to Level 1 and a Work Skills qualification. This one year course is focused on progression, either to further specialised study at Level 2 or into employment.

BTECs are vocationally related qualifications, where you develop knowledge and understanding by applying your learning and skills in a work-related context. They are effective because they engage you to take responsibility for your own learning and to develop skills that are essential for the work place. These skills include: team working; working from a prescribed brief; working to deadlines; presenting information effectively; and accurately completing administrative tasks and processes.

Throughout the course you will study several modules involving areas such as Creative Media Skills, Multimedia Products, Digital Photography, Audio & Video Editing, Animation and Interactive Media.

Entry requirements

The course is designed primarily for 16–18 year olds who are getting started with a full-time creative experience. We recruit on the basis of your anticipated ability to successfully complete the requirements of the qualification & we recommend that you have some level of prior attainment at GCSE level. 

Assessment

Your achievement in this subject is dependent upon an enthusiasm for creativity, excellent attendance, punctuality, ability to meet deadlines and commitment.  You will learn in a friendly atmosphere, using a variety of assessment methods including: Practical tasks and assessments, written assignments, performance reviews, presentations and discussions.

Future opportunities

The course will enable you to develop a portfolio of work that could support progression into courses at Level 2, usually Creative Media, Photography or Art & Design. Alternatively you could choose to progress onto an apprenticeship or an Employability pathway.

Further information

The Media department offers the loan of a variety of technical equipment, from cameras to lighting kits and provides editing suites with industry standard programmes such as Adobe Creative Suite. You will, however, need to purchase your own hard drive, SD cards and card reader. Although you are provided with initial printing credit it is your responsibility to top it up over the course of the year. We also offer enrichment opportunities such as trips to London and New York.
