A Level History at St Thomas More High School for Boys

Course description

History at this level is analytical and synoptic. You will be expected to write regular research essays, requiring a great deal of reading, note making and thought. You will learn to read historical sources of evidence and will develop the skills to interpret them. You will also learn how to construct an argument and support it with historical evidence. History will stimulate and sustain your interest and teach you about people and societies both in the past and the present.

Course content

The modules studied are linked by the theme of power, politics & nationalism. While the modules taught are exclusively British & European, the coursework affords students the opportunity to write about any aspect of world, or indeed, local History.

Entry requirements

Students should ideally have at least a grade ‘B’ at GCSE level in History, but each student will be considered on individual merit. Candidates who have not taken GCSE History should have at least a grade ‘A’ in GCSE English.

Future opportunities

History ‘A’ level is a good preparation for a wide variety of careers. It will give you a greater understanding of human behaviour and the ability to understand other people’s opinions and points of view.

Highly regarded by Universities as an academic subject you can go on to study History, American Studies, Law, Politics, Government and Politics, Journalism, Business Management, Philosophy, Economics (PPE) etc.

Our former students have been highly successful, most go on to a further study of History or related subjects.
