BTEC National in Sport at West Coventry 6th Form (Woodlands Academy, Tile Hill Wood School, Westwood Academy)

Course description

This is an ideal course for ‘examination averse’ students interested in sport. If you panic in exams or just prefer predominantly coursework based study, this will enable you to progressively cover (and be assessed in) the content, and enable you to know exactly where you are in terms of progress at, each stage.

Course content

Depending upon the pathway chosen, units may be typically represented by, for example: Principles of Anatomy & Physiology in Sport, Sports Coaching, Psychology for Sports Performance, Fitness Training and Programming, Sports Development, Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise, Analysis of Sports Performance, Practical Team/ Individual Sports, Risk Assessment in Sport. These are just a few of up to 30 units or more, which could be studied. Each unit lasts around 60 hours of lesson study, plus further study outside lesson time.

Entry requirements

GCSE grade C in PE or BTEC L2 Distinction (possibly a Merit in some cases)

Assessment

Year 12 & 13: By internal assessment of written assignments/ units followed by external verification of samples of that completed work

Future opportunities

This is a level 3 Award, equivalent to A level – and can be chosen alongside other GCE A levels. It is a vocational in nature, designed to provide a specialist work-related qualification, suitable for a career in sport, coaching and fitness, and related fields of study, which comes in two sizes: BTEC National Diploma (equivalent to 2 A levels): this gives a strong grounding in key expertise, and a strong knowledge base BTEC National Extended Diploma (equivalent to 3 A levels): this gives a specialist extended vocational grounding, and can lead to BTEC HND/HNC awards, a foundation degree, or a university degree

Further information

Students follow and complete a series of assignments, which might include presentations, case studies and projects, and performance observation. The assignments form Units, which are internally marked then externally verified
