Textiles AS Level at North Lindsey College
This course is delivered in two separate parts. The AS Design and Technology: Product Design (Textiles) course in year 1 and the A2 Design and Technology: Product Design (Textiles) course in year 2, leading to a full A Level qualification.
AS Design and Technology: Product Design (Textiles) First Year:
Unit 1 - Materials, Components and Application:
You will be given the opportunity to study and work with a range of textile materials and techniques, including surface decoration methods and pattern drafting. You will also investigate some of the major developments in design throughout the 19th and 20th Century and their influence on fashion and textile design. You will develop your knowledge and understanding of the design process, studying a range of products, design contexts and communication methods. This unit will include a 2-hour written exam.
Unit 2 – Course Work - Learning Through Designing and Making:
You will use the knowledge acquired in unit 1 to design and make a number of products that will form a portfolio of work.
A2 Design and Technology: Product Design (Textiles) Second Year:
Unit 3 - Design and Manufacture:
You will further develop your knowledge and understanding of materials and components, design process and manufacture. This unit will include a 2-hour written exam.
Unit 4 - Coursework - Designing and Making Practice:
You will design and make your own product.
You will need a minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade C, including English. Grade C in a Design and Technology/Art subject or equivalent is also advantageous. Students who do not have a GCSE C or above in a creative subject will be required to produce a portfolio of work to ascertain their ability.
50% written exam and 50% internal assessment
Students achieving the As qualification will be able to progress to the A2 in Textiles
