Year 12 - Papers 1 and 2: Searching for rights and freedoms in the 20th century


Paper 1 - ‘In search of the American dream, c1917-96’

Changing political environment; Civil rights; Changing society and culture; Changing quality of life; Impact of the Reagan presidency.

30% of course / 2 hour 15 min exam


Paper 2 - South Africa, 1948-94: from apartheid state to ‘rainbow nation’

The response to apartheid; radicalisation of resistance and consolidation of government power; Redefining resistance and challenges to government; The end of apartheid and the creation of the ‘rainbow nation’.

20% of course / 1 hour 30 min exam


Year 13 - Paper 3 and Coursework - to be confirmed

30% of course / 2 hour 15 min exam


Coursework - to be confirmed

20% of course / 3000-4000 word essay

History is a facilitating subject.Facilitating subjects are the subjects most commonly required or preferred by universities to get on to a range of degree courses. They can help students keep their options open when choosing a degree and many of the top universities will ask you to have at least one A-level in a facilitating subject when you apply.
