Mathematics with Mechanics AS and A Level at Shenley Brook End School

Course description

The three modules taken for AS are:
• Core Mathematics 1 (Indices and surds, polynomials, co-ordinate geometry and
graphs, differentiation)
• Core Mathematics 2 (Trigonometry, sequences and series, algebra and
integration, numerical methods)
• Mechanics 1 (Force as a vector, equilibrium of a particle, kinematics of motion in a straight line, Newton’s laws of motion, linear momentum)

The three modules taken for A Level are:
• Core Mathematics 3 (Algebra and functions, trigonometry, differentiation and
integration, numerical methods)
• Core Mathematics 4 (Algebra and graphs, differentiation and integration,
differential equations, vectors)
• Mechanics 2 (Centre of mass, equilibrium of a rigid body, motion of a projectile,
uniform motion in a circle, coefficient of restitution and impulse, energy, work and
power)

Course content

Mathematics with Mechanics is very valuable as a supporting subject to many courses at Advanced GCE and degree level, especially in Physics and the Sciences, Engineering and Medical courses. It is strongly recommended for degree courses in Architecture and ICT.

Entry requirements

A*/A in GCSE Mathematics recommended (or very high B from the Higher Tier).

Assessment

The modules of the course are assessed purely by written examinations. Each module is equally weighted, with each exam lasting 1hr 30mins. Core 1 is a non- calculator paper. Core Mathematics 1, Core Mathematics 2, Mechanics 1 are assessed in Year 12. Core Mathematics 3, Core Mathematics 4, Mechanics 2 are assessed in Year 13.
