Veterinary Care Assistant Level 2 Diploma at Bath College

Course description

This is a full-time course with potentially two days a week in College and two days in a work placement. You may be of an employed, voluntary or non-employed status, but you must be able to gain real experience of a veterinary care environment. You will undertake a substantial period of recorded work experience (600 hours) within a suitable veterinary care environment, which cannot be simulated. This qualification is aimed for students looking to start a career within the veterinary care sector. This qualification is suitable if you are 16 years, or older.

Course content

This qualification covers a specialist area related to the skills and knowledge required for working as a Veterinary Care Assistant in a veterinary care environment.


All learners must take the mandatory units:


  • Principles and practices of animal handling and care in the veterinary environment
  • Principles and practices of assisting with care in the veterinary environment
  • Principles and practices of administrative duties in the veterinary care environment

Entry requirements

Four GCSEs at grade D or above, including maths and English language; or a Level 1 Diploma.


Through college based assignments and in the workplace for practical elements, which will be assessed by suitably qualified staff.

Future opportunities

You can (with a Distinction and L2 FS or GCSE Maths and English A*-C) progress onto the L3 Diploma Veterinary Nursing (you will need to gain employment in an RCVS Approved Training Practice). Or progress onto any other L3 course.
