Mathematics A-Level at Christ's College Finchley

Course description

Welcome to the Mathematics Department – A integral element for the Mathematics and Science Specialist Academy

The mathematics department prides itself on our enthusiasm and passion for the subject. We strive to ensure students share with us our enjoyment for the subject and learn to appreciate the beauty of mathematics both inside the classroom as well as its purpose in the real world.

We encourage students to develop confidence in, and a positive attitude towards, mathematics and to recognise the importance of mathematics in their own lives and to society.

The mathematics department supports students in many different ways. Regular revision classes are offered free of charge to all examination classes. Extra revision classes are organised in preparation for the exams in the final weeks prior to their examinations. Extensive on-line resources, PowerPoint presentation lessons and questions covering all the topics can be found on the School’s VLE.

Key stage 5: The course is broken into two 1-year components. The first year covers three modules which contribute to an AS qualification in Mathematics and the second year covers another three modules which collaboratively make the A2 qualification in Mathematics. The same applies for the Further Mathematics AS and A2 qualifications, as well as Additional Further Mathematics AS and A2 qualifications (this can only be studied following a meeting with the head of department alongside appropriate provision).

The modules taught are as follows:

Year 12 Mathematics (AS) – Core 1, Core 2 and Statistics 1

Year 13 Mathematics (A2) – Core 3, Core 4 and Mechanics 1

Extra Curriculum

We have been fortunate to establish a link with King’s College London, providing additional lessons for interested year 12 and year 13 students covering problem solving in mathematics alongside developing their passion for the subject and aiding towards the upcoming examinations.

Additional to these, a workshop to explore the skills required and the demands expected within the financial industry was organised for year 12 students at the Investment Bank UBS in Liverpool Street, Central London.

Since 2000, the department have provided the gifted mathematicians the chance to participate in the United Kingdom Maths Challenge, which has proved year upon year to be a success.

Entry requirements

For studying at Advanced Level

Applicants must achieve a minimum average GCSE score of 40 points (where A* counts 58 points, A as 52, B as 46, C as 40, etc.).  Students who have studied at BTEC Level 2 must have achieved a high Merit grade as a minimum.  In addition there are GCSE requirements for individual subjects, where they are oversubscribed. Where subjects are oversubscribed, places will be offered to students in rank order of their average point score.

Subject specific requirements

A Grade B is the normal requirement in the subject you wish to study at Advanced Level but a Grade B does not guarantee acceptance on to the course.  Where a course is under-subscribed consideration will be given to those candidates who marginally fail to meet the entry requirements.

For the Mathematics A-Level specifically you must achieve the following:

GCSE Mathematics - B
