Course Content for 'AS'

  • Applied Science gives you an awareness of how industry applies science in a wide range of essential functions. You will have the opportunity to learn about the basic principles underlying the application of biological, chemical, environmental and physical areas of science and the relationships between these areas in particular fields; an introduction to a range of career possibilities which use aspects of science as their base point; a balanced background of scientific applications and principles, giving both breadth and depth to your knowledge.


  • Through this course you will experience science in a working environment through a variety of approaches, including work experience, links with local employers, case studies and research.


  • Topics included in your study will include Investigating Science at Work, Energy Transfer Systems and Finding out about Substances.

Entry requirements

What qualifications are needed?


It is expected that you will have a grade C or above in GCSE Applied or Additional Science and it is also beneficial to have a grade C in Maths and English.

You must be enthusiastic and have a practical interest in science. As a large amount of the work is on portfolios it is essential to be well organised and be able to meet deadlines.

There is a wide range of opportunities for those interested in science. Career options range from healthcare, chemical industry, medical and laboratory based science and the food and catering industries.

Applied Science provides a sound basis for HE courses in biochemical science, food technology, human physiology, material science, nursing, sports science or any science based course.

'Studying Applied Science has been very enjoyable. The mixture of practical based biology, chemistry and physics in the course has been interesting to learn about, especially finding out how these topics are put to use in the real world.
