Course description

About the syllabus:

Studying German is uniquely beneficial in terms of job opportunities in Europe and worldwide. Nearly every major company has an office in a German city and their increasing European economic strength means that, as someone with good German language skills, you will be extremely employable.

The German course offers the opportunity to become more fluent in your writing and speaking skills and to go beyond the vocabulary and topics of GCSE by studying cultural topics such as German film, history and literature. Our students enjoy opportunities for travel in Germany to enhance their language skills, helping them to understand spoken and written German with greater confidence.

Whether you are interested in following a path in Science and Engineering or a career in the Arts, German will most definitely enhance your opportunities.

Course content

AS units in Year 12 Units

Unit 1 Listening, Reading and Writing and Essay

Candidates complete comprehension questions and produce an essay on a choice of topics.

Exam 2 hours 70% of AS Level 35% of A Level

Unit 2 Speaking

Candidates talk about a subject they have chosen and answer questions on topics studied throughout the year.

Exam  35mins (20 mins prep) 30% of AS Level 15% of A Level

A2 units in Year 13

Unit 3 Listening, Reading and Writing

Candidates complete comprehension questions, translation exercises and an essay on a cultural topic they have studied.

Exam 2hr 30mins  35% of A Level

Unit 4 Speaking

Candidates speak and defend their opinions on selected topics.

Exam 35mins (20 mins prep) 15% of A Level

Entry requirements

A*-A in GCSE German, having completed the higher tier papers.


Entry criteria for A2 is at least a D at the requisite AS Level
