Commercial Music Level 2 (First Diploma) at Bridgwater College

Course description

This course is ideal if you have basic skills in music or music technology and you want to develop your practical and theoretical understanding. You will have the chance to build up skills in making music using technology, including sequencing and recording in a wide variety of styles. You will also have the chance to study related subjects including musical styles, the music business and events management. In addition you have the option to study either a music performance or DJ technology session to develop your specialist area of interest.

Course content

This one-year course gives an introduction to a wide range of music related subjects. It is made up of units that develop practical music skills and knowledge of the music industry. If you want to be a musician this course will offer you the chance to perform as part of the band or as a soloist. For those wishing to become DJ’s and Music Producers the course will begin the development of key skills required for these roles.

Core Units

All BTEC Level 2 Diploma Commercial Music students take these subjects:

  • Working in the Music Industry
  • Professional Development in the Music Industry
  • Planning and Creating a Music Product
  • Exploring Computer Systems Used by Musicians
  • Producing a Musical Recording
  • Investigating an Area of Music
  • Exploring Musical Composition.

Students are given the option to specialise in either Music Performance or DJ Technology as part of the Commercial Music programme and in these specialist sessions you will cover some of the following units:

  • Rehearsal Techniques for Musicians
  • Developing as a Musical Performer
  • DJ Technology & Performance.

Successful completion of the course will give you a nationally recognised qualification.

Entry requirements

At least five GCSEs grades in the A* - E range; Music is preferable. Entry to this course is subject to a successful interview, and audition with your chosen instrument, if you wish to study the performance session. However, if you wish to study DJ technology no prior experience is required.

Assessment

Assessment is by coursework based on assignments set in each unit. Assignments will involve: practical projects, group and individual project work as well as written work and research. Assessments are graded at distinction, merit or pass level. On successful completion of the course, you will be awarded an overall distinction, merit or pass grade.

Future opportunities

On completion of the Level 2 Diploma with a Merit average and an interview, students can progress onto the Level 3 Extended Diploma courses including Music Practice, Music Technology or Production Arts. For the Extended Diploma in Music Practice an audition is also required.

Previous students have been employed by organisations within the Performance Arts, Music and Media Industries.
