Applied Science at Moorlands Sixth Form College

Course description

AQA Extended Certificate

This qualification will provide learners with a broad understanding of vocationally-related sciences to support progress to higher education.  It is suitable for studying alongside substantial academic qualifications, such as A level sciences or other Level 3 vocational qualifications.  This qualification can also prepare learners to take up employment in the applied science sector either directly after achieving the qualification or via higher education.

 

Course content

Y12

Unit 1 - Madatory.  Key concepts in science.  Theoretical unit in which learners develop their knowledge and understanding of how science is applied in the medical, healthcare, food, environmental, chemical, pharmaceutical, material and automotive industries.

Unit 2 - Builds on unit 1.  Learners must produce a portfolio of six practicals that are used in industry.  This may involve testing techniques and products that already exist and are used in modern lab settings. 

Unit 3  - Focusses on science in the modern world and aims to develop analytical, evaluative and critical thinking skills.  it explores topical issues such as fracking, antibiotic resistance and roles of scientists.

Y13

Unit 4 - The human body, focussing on diet, health and linked systems.

Unit 5 - Scientific research investigation.

Unit 6 - Choice of microbiology, medical physics or organic chemistry.

 

Entry requirements

Minimum of 5 higher grades at GCSE including English and maths.

GCSE applied science at double or GCSE additional science.

Assessment

Y12

Unit 1 - Written exam (30% of Certificate)

Unit 2 - Portfolio of six scientific investigations (40% of Certificate)

Unit 3 - Exam based on pre-released material (30% of Certificate)

Y13

Unit 4 - External exam

Unit 5 - Portfolio - Internally assessed

Unit 6 - Internally assessed

Internally assessed units in Y13 are worth 50% of the Extended Certificate

Future opportunities

This qualification can fulfil the entry requirements for a number of science-related higher education courses.
