Design and Technology: Product Design (3D Design) at The Royal Grammar School, High Wycombe

Course description

The A Level course has been designed to enable candidates to develop an understanding of a broad range of materials, with an emphasis on the life cycle of products, manufacture and final disposal. The specification also considers the broader issues for the designer including the environmental sustainability of products and consumer safety.

The course is broken down into four separate Units all of which are equally valued at 25% of the final assessment.


Course content

Unit 1
2 hour written paper on materials and components, manufacturing processes and design.

Unit 2
50-hour coursework design and manufacture project and portfolio of your choice.

Unit 3
2 hour written paper based on materials and components with specific reference to Manufacture and Design.

Unit 4
60-hour coursework design and manufacture project and portfolio of your choice.

Entry requirements

Grade B in an appropriate Design and Technology GCSE

This course offers students the opportunity to design, manufacture and evaluate meaningful products manufactured from resistant materials, from first principles, and should benefit anyone interested in pursuing a career in any form of engineering, along with design or architectural based careers. It offers active development of real skills, knowledge, processes and an awareness of man’s impact on the planet.
