Physical Education A Level *FEES PAYABLE* at Thetford Grammar School

Course description

The AS and A level in PE is again with a mixture of theory and practical work, with much more emphasis on the theoretical components than at GCSE.  Taking the subject can help students who are intending to follow a career in the sporting or leisure world, and can also provide an excellent contrast in the school day for students with an interest in this area who are taking AS and A levels in more ‘traditional’ subjects. Students can start an A level in Physical Education without having a GCSE in the subject. It is by no means a subject just for games players and there is a great deal of science and analysis required by those taking the subject.

Course content

The AS includes compulsory sections on Anatomy and Physiology, Acquiring Movement Skills and Socio-Cultural Studies and is 60% theory and 40% coursework. Assessment is in the form of one 2 hour examination. Coursework is internally assessed but externally moderated on two chosen activities, and can involve performing, coaching or officiating in these activities. Also candidates are required to observe a performance, then evaluate and plan for the improvement of performance, and give an oral response outlining their action plan. All Coursework requires video evidence.

A2 includes topics from Historical Studies, Comparative Studies, Sports Psychology, Biomechanics and Exercise and Sport Physiology. The terminal exam has an element of choice. Video-recorded coursework involves a performance of one sport, or coaching/officiating, and evaluation of a live performance where students recommend an appropriate strategy to improve performance in an oral response format as at AS level.
