Geology A Level at Bexhill College

Course description

Do you want to study a subject that encompasses many of the Earth’s most pressing issues? Do you want a job that involves travel? Do you like problem solving? Do you enjoy practical science? If so, study Geology! Geology is an interesting and varied subject that is taught through classroom theory, practical work and field trips. Geology also complements the Sciences and Maths. Geologists are amongst the most employable in these times of economic change as a result of the need for resources, as well as in areas such as energy, waste and water management. 
 

Course content

Component 1: Geological Investigations
This exam consists of stimulus questions with short and structured questions as well as an investigation base on a Geological map. This will involve interpretation of hand specimens and photographs, map interpretation and cross sections as well as short, structured and extended questions.
Component 2: Geological Principles and Processes
Six stimulus response questions requiring short, structured and extended answers.
Component 3: Geological Applications 
Geohazards, Geological map application and an option from Quaternary Geology, Geological Evolution of Britain and Geology of the Lithosphere. 
Practical Endorsement: An assessment of practical competency. Students undertake four days of fieldwork over the two years and complete experiments in the laboratory to pass the practical endorsement. 
 

Entry requirements

At Least 5 GCSEs Graded 9-4 Or A*-C Including Science And Maths At Grade C/4 Or Above.

Assessment

The new A Level consists of three examined components and a practical endorsement, the examined elements have a strong focus on analytical and evaluative skills throughout.
 

Financial information

Students will be required to undertake a residential trip.
 

Future opportunities

Students taking Geology can continue to university to study a range of subjects including geology, civil engineering, mining geology and hazard management. Students could also complete work based training with organisation in these sectors or use this valuable qualification to enter the world of employment.
