Public Services Level 1 at St Helens College

Course description

This course is a great introduction to studying public services and gives you the opportunity to prepare for study at level 2.

You'll be working on improving your physical fitness in our gym and sports facilities, as well as improving your team working skills and learning how to carry out essential map reading and navigation.

Course content

During this course, you will cover the following units:

  • Investigating employment opportunities in the uniformed services
  • Wellbeing and physical fitness
  • Team working skills
  • Developing self discipline
  • Carrying out essential map reading and navigation
  • Health, safety and emergency care
  • Participating in competitive sports

Entry requirements

You should have GCSEs at grade E or above in English and maths.
English and maths forms an important part of your future, ensuring you achieve the best success in your chosen career. But don't worry, if you haven't got the desired grades, we will still have a course available for you.


You will be assessed through a combination of presentations, practical observations, simulations, written work, poster design and discussions.

Financial information

If you are a school leaver, aged 16-18, (under the age of 19 on or before 31st August 2016), you do not pay tuition fees or examination and registration fees and may be eligible for additional support depending on your financial situation.

Future opportunities

Once you've completed this course, you will have the opportunity to continue you your studies at level 2.
