Creative Digital Media Production BTEC Level 3 at Shipley College
On this challenging and exciting course, the focus is on graphic design, photography and moving image. You will also undertake research and written work relating to media theory. Presentations, written work and workshops help you develop strong interpersonal skills and a sound knowledge of the media industry.
You develop your abilities with industry standard software such as Adobe Creative Suite 6 (Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Flash, Illustrator and Premier). In addition, you gain vital experience of working to a professional brief with employers through the Centre of Excellence for Business.
This is a very practical course where you will have the opportunity to use industry standard software for digital story boarding and web comics, 3D modelling, animation, sound & video production, website creation, digital artwork and CD- Rom production. You will also produce some academic theory and research through written work.
You will also have the opportunity, in the second year, to work on a Professional Brief unit where you will be responsible for creating and presenting a Digital Showcase, in liaison with the Marketing department at Shipley College.
At the end of the year, you will get to exhibit your work in a Digital Showcase for parents and visitors to see. This will build your ‘multimedia’ skills and develop your confidence, time management, and team work and communication skills.
You will work on multimedia design projects to develop your practical skills in a variety of areas.

- 2D Animation.
In addition, modules you will study include Animation, Multimedia Production, 3D Modeling and you will also have to work to a client brief to create a final major project.
You will also study Functional Skills at a suitable level in English, maths and ICT. Functional skills help to make students more employable and improve CVs or personal statements. If you are considering university then, Functional Skills can help contribute to your UCAS points.
- 4 GCSEs at grade A* - C (9-4), including English and maths. If you don’t have grade C (5-4) in both subjects, the minimum for the other is grade D (3). or a full Level 2 at PP grade or above with maths and English grades equivalent to those stated above. *
- You will be able to demonstrate a creative flair (at interview), be highly motivated and have a keen interest in graphic design, photography and/or moving image.
- You also have the chance to attend ‘taster’ sessions to find out more about the course.
* Students with grade D (3) in either English or maths will be expected to re-take that subject in Year 1.
All the work on this course is portfolio based and practical (e.g. creating a video or interactive game). Most units will require you to carry out research, plan and create a product and then finally evaluate your work. You may also need to take GCSE or Functional Skills tests which require learners to sit externally set tests.
Most students will not have to pay tuition fees. You will need a small amount of money for recommend textbooks and study materials – help can sometimes be provided with these costs. You will have to buy consumables such as computer disks, stationery and files. The college will provide you with a kit list for specific projects.
On successful completion of the course you will be ready for progression in to Higher Education or employment in any of the following areas: graphic design, photography, video production, animation, web design, digital concept art or any related media pathway.
In addition to time in college you will need to spend some time on homework and assignments that are given to you by the tutor.
