Catering & Hospitality Apprenticeship Level 2 at Bolton College

Course description

Our Apprenticeship programmes will give you vital hands-on experience, learning from real life situations, with the guidance of industry professionals. You’ll gain the skills and confidence needed to excel in your chosen career.

The hospitality industry employs over 10% of the UK’s workforce, so building a career in this sector could be very rewarding.

This one-year course is a great way to gain a recognised qualification while earning a salary. You will train in housekeeping, front of house reception, waiters/silver service waiters and behind a bar.

Once qualified, you could pursue work in restaurants, hotels, cafes and pubs – not to mention schools, colleges, hospitals and large businesses that need catering staff too.

The course is a great way to build on your skills and gain a recognised qualification whilst also earning a salary. Plus, 90% of apprentices stay in employment after finishing their Apprenticeship!*

Course content

What you'll learn

Mandatory units:

  • Maintenance of a Safe, Hygienic & Secure Working Environment
  • Working Effectively as Part of a Hospitality Team
  • Give Customers a Positive Impression of Yourself & Your Organisation
  • Maintain Food Safety when Storing, Preparing & Cooking Food
  • Maintain Food Safety when Storing, Holding & Serving Food

Optional units include:

  • Prepare & Clear Areas for Counter & Takeaway Service
  • Provide a Counter & Takeaway Service
  • Serve Food at the Table

Functional Skills (if applicable):

  • English Level 1
  • Maths Level 1

Additional qualifications:

  • Employee Rights & Responsibilities (ERR)
  • Personal Learning & Thinking Skills (PLTS)

We encourage English & maths study to Level 3 if required for your chosen HE course or career.

Entry requirements

You’ll need enthusiasm, motivation and a keen interest in your chosen sector.

To complete an Apprenticeship you will need an employer who is willing to support you throughout your training. If you have not found one, we can help you with your search.

We’d like to see a proven track record of very good attendance at work/school, along with a good reference from school/a previous employer. We also ask that you have a satisfactory level of English and maths.

 

Assessment

There will be 14 practical assessments during your work placement as well as at College. There will also be 14 written multiple-choice question papers, administered and marked at College.

As an apprentice, you will spend one day a week in College to attend food preparation training and theory classes.

Financial information

Future opportunities

On successful completion of this Apprenticeship, you could progress onto full-time employment, professional job-specific qualifications, Higher Apprenticeships or a degree programme.

Following further study you could work as:

  • A Kitchen Manager where you could earn up to £35,000 a year, depending on your experience.
  • A Front of House Receptionist, earning on average £17,000 a year.
  • A Silver Service Waiter, earning around £15,000 a year.

We’re the number one General FE and Tertiary College for 16-18 achievement rates in Greater Manchester.

Ofsted Grade 2 ‘Good’

Ofsted also agrees; in February we were inspected and graded 2 for ‘Good’. Ofsted highlighted the fact that our learners develop good employability and personal skills and that a high proportion progress to Apprenticeships, employment or Higher Education.

Support

The College will support you throughout your time here. In College, you will receive personal support from your tutor; out of College, you will have your own personal Assessor, who will visit you in the workplace.

During their recent visit in February 2017, Ofsted commended the College for its provision of “well targeted information, advice and careers guidance, which meets individual needs and enables learners to make informed choices about the next steps in their learning and career”.
