ICT AS and A Level at Thomas Whitham Sixth Form

Course description

The overall aim of this course is to help students who wish to go on to higher education courses or employment where understanding how ICT can be used in society and business, and the implications of its use, will be a valuable asset. The course offers more opportunities for practical work than the previous specification.

The AS level course forms 50% of the assessment of the full A level. AS level can be taken as a separate qualification or as the first part of the full advanced level course. Assessment is by means of two units of assessment at each level. At AS students will need to create a number of their own problem solutions and sit ONE exam based on problem solving skills (INFO1) and ONE written exam requiring short answers (INFO2). At A2 students will need to sit ONE written exam requiring extended answers (INFO3) and complete ONE documented project solution involving database skills (INFO4).

Entry requirements

No previous knowledge of ICT is assumed although these courses develop the aims of GCSE ICT qualifications by enhancing and broadening the range and understanding of the capabilities of applications and information systems studied.

The ICT AS/A2 Level courses reflect the need to develop skills and attitudes that increase candidates’ abilities to address the social and ethical issues of technological advancement.

The Cisco CCNA® Discovery curriculum provides foundational networking knowledge, practical experience, opportunities for career exploration, and soft-skills development to help students prepare for entry-level careers in IT and networking.

The curriculum offers a hands-on approach to learning, and uses interactive tools and easy-to-follow labs to help students learn the general theory needed to build networks.

Students who enrol in CCNA Discovery are not expected to have any previous technical skills or knowledge, aside from basic PC skills.
