Mathematics - Use of Maths at Andover College

Course description

Use of Mathematics was developed to enable the study of mathematical topics in practical, real-life contexts. This qualification will enable students who are taking non-Maths subjects such as Humanities, Arts, Sport and Business to have the opportunity to pursue practical and relevant mathematics courses to the same level as traditional GCE A Level Mathematics.

This specification is designed to encourage students to:

  • apply mathematics to their studies, work or interests
  • develop mathematical modelling, communication and reasoning skills and the ability to solve substantial, realistic and open-ended problems
  • Units Covered
    AS/A2 Use of Mathematics comprises the compulsory unit algebra plus two applications units of data analysis and decision mathematics.All the modules are assessed as written exam, each with pre-release data sheet and calculators are allowedThe data sheet is issued two weeks before the examination, which familiarises students with the scenarios and the vocabulary that will be required in the examination.

    5 A* – C grades at GCSE including Maths at grade B or above.Interview Required: Yes
