Course description


Course content

The BTEC National Certificate is undertaken over two years. The course requires the students to complete 6 Units each year. The BTEC National Certificate is equivalent to two A2 levels.

  • Practical Individual Sports
  • Fitness testing for Sport & Exercise
  • Sports Injuries
  • Instructing Physical Activity & Exercise
  • Exercise, Health & Lifestyle

Year 2

  • Health & Safety in Sport
  • Training & Fitness for sport
  • Sports Coaching
  • Sports Development
  • Rules, Regulations & Officiating in Sport
  • Outdoor and Adventurous Activities

Entry requirements

A minimum of 5 GCSEs A* -  C.



Students must complete an internally set assignment for each Unit of Study. All assignments are internally assessed and a sample of work will be assessed externally. Students will be graded at a Pass, Merit or Distinction grade in each Unit which will determine the level of the overall qualification.

BTEC Nationals are qualifications that are designed to provide specialist work-related qualifications in a range of sectors. They give learners the knowledge, understanding and skills that they need to prepare them for employment.

This course provides students with the skills to work in a range of settings within the sports development and leisure industry or they may instead wish to progress to higher education sports related course.

Methodology / Evidence:

The majority of the time will be taken up with students working individually on assignment tasks. There will also be time when class teaching takes place. Students will also be involved in individual research. Assignment tasks will take many forms including:

  • Written reports
  • Student presentations recorded on DVD
  • Student interviews recorded on DVD
  • Leaflets / posters
  • Health / exercise plans
  • Activity plans
  • Risk assessments
