Applied Engineering A Level at Waddesdon CofE School

Course description

Students will be encouraged to take a broad view of engineering and to develop selected areas in more depth. You will study materials, manufacturing, design, engineering science and engineering maths. More details about the content of the course are given in the unit outline below:

Course content

Unit 1: Materials, Processes and Techniques
Studying the properties and use of a range of engineering materials. (External exam)

Unit 2: The Role of the Engineer
You will be assigned to a company to investigate the role of an engineer.

Unit 3: Principles of Design
Your own choice of a practical engineering design project. (Coursework Practical)

Unit 4: Applied Engineering Systems
Understanding the scientific and design principles that support all engineering activities. (External exam using pre-release brief)

Unit 5: The Engineering Environment
You will study an engineered project similar to Unit 2 but relate it to environmental issues and legislation. (Coursework Project)

Unit 6: Applied Design, Planning and Prototyping
Your own choice of a practical engineering design project. (Coursework Practical)

Entry requirements

The most important thing you need is a lively and enquiring mind, an interest in engineering and a willingness to explore new ideas. You will need to have studied GCSEs in Maths, Science and Technology to at least grade B.

Assessment

You will study 6 units in total. Two of these will be assessed by external exam. The remainder will be assessed by assignments, projects or case studies.

Future opportunities

This course will provide a wide range of opportunities for further education or careers in the engineering world. Taken with Mathematics or a Science, it provides ideal qualifications for a university course in engineering. Some of the possible fields of engineering are shown here:
