Course description

This course will give you the knowledge, practical experience and confidence to pursue a career in the make-up industry as a professional make-up artist for theatre, video or television.

Course content

  • basic and character make-up for TV , film and stage
  • fashion hair and make-up
  • prosthetics and bald caps
  • hair-styling, dressing, period, fashion and fantasy
  • airbrush and corrective make-up
  • wigmaking, wig and postiche application
  • bodypainting
  • working as a freelance and gaining employment
  • roles and responsibilities as a make-up & hair designer
  • production planning (as a make-up and hair designer)
  • art, design and development as a make-up artist

Entry requirements

  • four GCSEs at grade C or above, including English, with maths at grade D or above, or
  • an equivalent level 2 qualification with maths and English at level 1
  • you will be asked to provide evidence of your ability in the subject which could be in the form of a portfolio
  • successful attendance at interview event and satisfactory references


Your work will be assessed through a mixture of practical tasks and supporting written material. Your progress throughout will be supported by regular ongoing feedback.

Financial information

FREE to UK/EU under 19s not in employment

Future opportunities

  • progress onto university higher level course HND or degree
  • work as a freelance or gain employment in TV, Film, fashion, stage and wig making

    • September 2014 sees the grand unveiling of a new £45 million Thurrock Campus in Grays which will include restaurants, health facilities, shops and an advice centre. There will also be specialist workshop and studio spaces linked to courses for technology, media and creative arts, and facilities for art, design, logistics, engineering and IT courses.

      There will also be key areas available for public and community use. Hair and beauty salons, a restaurant and coffee shop will also be open to the public and are destined to breathe new life back into Grays.
