English Language (AS / A Level) at Middlesbrough College

Course description

This is an ideal course for those interested in the development and use of the English Language. You will have the opportunity to produce creative, discursive and analytical writing. Students may wish to study English Language alongside English Literature if they are interested in entering the teaching profession as a teacher of English.

Entry requirements

Five or more GCSEs at grade C or above, including Maths, and a grade B in English Language (subject to QCA score). If you do not have a Grade A to C in English and/or Maths, you will be required to continue studying these subjects as part of your Study Programme.

Assessment

At AS there are two external examinations each of 1.5 hours. Paper 1 is based around language and the individual and is worth 50%. Paper 2 is based on language varieties and is worth 50%. Guidance and support will be given.

Future opportunities

A student of English Language will acquire many desirable skills for employers as they progress through the course. Students may wish to study both English disciplines or decide to combine it with subjects such as Psychology, History and Sociology. English Language is aimed at those considering a career in many fields and professions and is therefore useful for a wide range of careers in the following areas: Management, Law, Education (home or abroad), Publishing, Media, Journalism, Museum Service, Business, Charity.
