Level 3 BTEC National Extended Diploma in Sport at Wigan Warriors Performance and Education Academy

Course description

As an alternative to taking A Levels, the Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport is equivalent to 1, 2 or 3 A-Levels dependent on the total number of units you undertake.

This Level 3 BTEC programme is for studentswho wish to take a more academic pathway towards University whilst developing a comprehensive understanding of the Sports Performance, Health and Fitness Industry.

Encompassing practical techniques, academic knowledge and technical skills, the Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport is a popualr qualification for school leavers with aspirations of attending university. 

The course contains an interesting mix of units such as: practical sport, fitness testing and training, sports injuries, sports massage, and many more. 

The course is delivered via practical sessions, classroom lectures, industry visits and case studies, with specialist input from the Warriors Team and backroom staff.

In addition to obtaining the Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma qualification, students will also undertake a Level 1 Award in Coaching Rugby Leage through RFL. Development training will be led by highly qualified Performance Coaches here at the Warriors.

All students will be supported through their UCAS University applications where appropriate. 

Course content

Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport = 14 Units

Learners will study mandatory units:

• Unit 1: Anatomy and Physiology
• Unit 2: Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Well-being
• Unit 3: Professional Development in the Sports Industry
• Unit 4: Sports Leadership
• Unit 7: Practical Sports performance
• Unit 8: Coaching for performance
• Unit 9: Research Methods in Sport
• Unit 19: Development and provision of Sport and Physical activity
• Unit 22: Investigating Business in Sport and the Active leisure Industry
• Unit 23: Skill Acquisition in Sport.
 
Plus a range of Optional Units from:
Unit 5 Application of Fitness Testing
Unit 6 Sports Psychology
Unit 10 Sports Event Organisation
Unit 17 Sports Injury Management
Unit 24 Sports Performance Analysis
Unit 25 Rules Regulations and Offiating in Sport
Unit 26 Technical and Tactical Demands of Sport
 

Entry requirements

*5 GCSE's grades A - D

*GCSE PE Grade A - C 

*Level 2 BTEC Sport is desirable

*An aspiration of progressing onto University after college

*A passion for the Sports, Health & Fitness Industries

Financial information

*Eligible students can apply and receive a Government Bursary that provides financial support whilst at college.  This is application based and means tested on the Family Houshold Income per student.

Future opportunities

What could this qualification lead to?
 
Learners who have completed this qualification in two years may progress to further learning at Level 3.
 
The qualification carries UCAS points and is recognised by higher education providers as meeting, or contributing to, admission requirements for many relevant courses. Learners can progress to higher education on full degree single or combined courses, for example:
 
• BA (Hons) in Sports Development and Management
• BSc(Hons) in Sports Management
• BSc (Hons) Sports Business Management
• BSc (Hons ) Sport and Leisure Management
• BSc (Hons) Sports Science (Outdoor Activities)
• BSc (Hons) in Exercise, Health and Fitness
• BSc (Hons) in Sport and Exercise Psychology.
 
Learners should always check the entry requirements for degree programmes with the specific higher education providers.
